DREW NUGENT & THE MIDNIGHT SOCIETY LIVE AT THE VELVET WHIP
Velvet Whip welcome shadow-side of jazz with Drew Nugent & The Midnight Society starting in January!
a crew of sonic troublemakers resurrecting the raw, unpolished electricity of early American nightlife. This isn’t museum jazz—this is the sound of back-rooms, basement bars, smoke-clouded corners, and after-hours mischief.
Led by Drew Nugent—cornet in one hand, mischief in the other—the Midnight Society plays with the fever and grit of a time when music wasn’t just entertainment, it was rebellion. Their sets swing, growl, laugh, and swagger with the wild, restless pulse of the 1910s–1930s underground scene.
Now slipping into residency at Velvet Whip, they bring a world where the lights are low, the rhythms stay hot, and the night has a mind of its own. It’s jazz for the nocturnal, the curious, the ones who chase feeling over perfection.
Step inside. Let the horns whisper, the banjo bite, and the past come roaring alive. Drew Nugent & The Midnight Society aren’t just performing—they’re conjuring a hidden era, one unforgettable night at a time.

FLIGHT OF FERNET-INDUSTRY FERNET TASTING NIGHT
Tuesday, February 17
🕙 10:00 PM
📍 Velvet Whip Arts & Social Club
If you’ve ever said
“yeah, I love Fernet”
and then chased it with a beer…
This night is for you.
A bartenders-friendly-energy tasting where we stop pretending Fernet is just a punishment shot and actually break it down—aroma, bitterness, weird herbs you can’t name, and why every bar somehow agrees this is the handshake.
🍸 Bring a pay stub → get a FREE Fernet flight
(No résumé required. We can tell.)
This is not a class.
This is not a brand pitch.
This is a support group with glassware.
So… What Is Fernet?
Fernet is a very bitter, herbal Italian amaro.
It’s dark. It’s intense. It tastes like:
herbs you didn’t know existed
a forest after rain
medicine your nonna insisted would fix everything
And yes—people drink it on purpose.
Why Does It Taste Like That?
Fernet is made by infusing dozens of herbs, roots, spices, and botanicals (often including myrrh, saffron, chamomile, gentian, mint—plus secrets no one will admit to).
It’s:
Bitter
Earthy
Minty
Medicinal
Completely unapologetic
There is no fruit-forward moment.
There is no “easy finish.”
That is the point.
Why Do Bartenders Love It?
We don’t know.

Harvest Groove Band feat. Tender Tan Burlesque
On the 1 Productions and Tender Tan Productions bring you Lovers Lane, vol 3. On Friday, February 6th, join us at Philly's favorite speakeasy and let us get you in the mood ahead of Valentine's Day with an evening of sultry burlesque and sensual live music - together on one stage!
Live music provided by:
Harvest Groove Band (@harvestgrooveband)
Featuring a lineup of some of Philly's best musicians, Harvest Groove is Philly’s favorite cover and backing band. They bring the sweet and sensual energy to every show they perform, with a mix of your favorite R&B, Soul, Jazz, and Funk hits, plus original tunes by individual band members.
Your burlesque dancers:
Ashantidoll (@ashantidoll)
Ashantidoll is a walking daydream dipped in rouge and rhythm. A burlesque muse with a vintage soul, she moves like a whispered secret from a sultry jazz performance to high energy and bold sets. She's all hips, humor, and cheeky stares. Get ready to stare right back.
Betty Fierce (@verybettyfierce)
Betty Fierce is Philadelphia’s Belting Boricua, whose powerhouse vocals and magnetic presence first lit up the scene when she claimed the Debutt of the Year Golden Tassel Jawn in 2020. A classically trained musical-theater artist, she blends deep musicality with high glamour to infuse bold, electric performance energy into every moment onstage. Get ready for this Betty, she’s Fierce!
erica gabrielle (@princessladye)
erica gabrielle is the carnal essence of your dreams and nightmares. Her theatrical character-driven performances will enamor you but something wicked lies behind her hips and eyes. With a background in jazz, pole, as well as professional haunting, her kindness kills. She is the reason the French translation for orgasm is "the little death".
Burlesque First-Timer?
Welcome to the wonderful world of burlesque! We are honored that you will be joining us. Here are some tips for making the most of your experience at the show.
DO: Be enthusiastic!
Burlesque performers thrive on an interactive audience! We highly encourage you to clap, cheer, and engage with your performers throughout the show. Applause is not only for the very end. This isn't golf.
DO: Dress for the occasion.
Don't be afraid to wear whatever makes you feel sultry or elegant. We are dressing up for you, after all.
DO: Tip your performers.
Burlesque takes a lot of time, energy, and financial investment. Performers are extremely dedicated to making this look easy and love putting on the best possible show for you. The ultimate way to show your appreciation and be an engaged audience member is through tipping. You are welcome to bring singles with which to shower your favorite performers! Additionally, we will have electronic payment options available.
DO: Ask for consent.
Do not touch your performers (or anyone for that matter) without their consent. We will not be lenient with this. We will also offer consent wristbands for those who seek a more interactive show.
DON'T: Harass or heckle the performers.
We will not tolerate any racism, sexism, misogynoir, homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, MAGAness, or any general disrespect. Those who engage in any of this behavior do not deserve our talents and will be asked to leave without refund.
DREW NUGENT & THE MIDNIGHT SOCIETY LIVE AT THE VELVET WHIP
Velvet Whip Welcomes DREW NUGENT & THE MIDNIGHT SOCIETY
a crew of sonic troublemakers resurrecting the raw, unpolished electricity of early American nightlife.
