Babatunde & King Noire Presents: Heaux Hopera
HEAUX HOPERA
YOU ARE INVITED TO AN EVENING OF THE UNEXPECTED
About
Babatunde HipHopera is an internationally celebrated baritone and the creator of Hip Hopera, a genre he pioneered by fusing the grandeur of classical opera with the rhythm and culture of hip-hop. Born in Nigeria and raised on Dr. Dre before discovering opera at 16, Tunde came to classical music as an outsider and never lost that perspective. It is what makes him singular.
In 2018, a video of Tunde blending Rossini’s Largo al Factotum with Kendrick Lamar’s HUMBLE went viral, amassing over 10 million views and earning coverage from TIME, Classic FM, Billboard, BET, ABC News, and more. What started as a moment became a movement. Hip Hopera is now a recognized genre, and Babatunde is its architect.
A classically trained opera singer, Tunde has performed with Los Angeles Opera, Detroit Opera, Utah Opera, and Portland Opera in standout roles including Matias Reyes in the Pulitzer Prize-winning opera The Central Park Five, Escamillo in Carmen, and Valentin in Faust. He has also appeared on Britain’s Got Talent, bringing Hip Hopera to a global television audience.
As a touring artist, Tunde has headlined sold-out tours across the country, and his shows are part concert, part storytelling, and a live experience unlike anything else in music today.
Off stage, Tunde has built a social media following in the millions by pulling back the curtain on opera and sharing its history, its Black pioneers, and his honest take on the industry. He has given audiences permission to love classical music on their own terms, and in doing so has brought thousands of people back to instruments that had been sitting in their attics for years.
Babatunde HipHopera is not just changing who listens to opera. He is changing what opera can be.

The Willie Green project East Coast Tour
From Willie Green III
“Music has been an essential part of my life since I was born. It has helped me through some of the toughest times and has taught me valuable life lessons like perseverance, dedication, and how to stay calm in challenging situations. My Uncle Walter, who was my first drum teacher, helped me develop as a drummer from age 5-17 and gave me some outstanding life lessons on the drums. He taught me to play in the pocket and keep the groove through a song. My first time working with music outside of the church was in the Marching band, which was a mind-blowing experience. Music is not just a science or an art; it is a way of life that brings joy, clarity, and unity to those who listen and play. Recently, I took up composition, which was a significant decision for me. Being a composer brings many ups and downs, but it still brings me joy frequently. The process is long and hard, but I know that the finished product will be worth it. Sometimes, I'm curious about how the piece will sound and how people will receive it. I believe that music reflects what is inside you, and it has helped me through difficult times, such as a breakup and my grandfather's death. I love listening to music to calm me down and help me get my thoughts out. Depending on the day, I can listen to anything, but I mostly go out of my way to listen to Black American, Classical, and Latin Music. The coronavirus pandemic has made me more grateful for the opportunity to play music and know what life would be if music wasn't a part of my life. Spirituality is important to me, and I believe that going within ourselves can help bring balance and truth into our lives. It allows us to get closer to God and encounter our true selves beyond what we think, see, or hear about ourselves. This journey can be difficult, but I believe that Jesus and spirituality can bring balance.”

The City Wide Sessions Returns! Hosted by Dan Kalowitz
Are you up to Jam with the best of Philly?
ARE YOU A MUSICIAN LOOKING TO JOIN THE JAM? RSVP FOR FREE ENTRY BELOW!
The last City Wide Sessions jam at Heritage Jazz in 2023 brought together a real mix of players—familiar faces, new voices, and the kind of easy collaboration that only happens when the room feels right. It’s the kind of night people still bring up.
Now, City Wide Sessions is returning—this time at Velvet Whip, with the possibility of becoming a monthly hang.
The idea is simple: create a consistent space where musicians across Philly can show up, sit in, experiment, and connect. A room that welcomes both seasoned players and newer artists, without pressure—just good energy and openness. It also creates a real opportunity for younger musicians to learn firsthand—playing alongside a high-quality house band, picking up the unspoken language of live performance in real time.
Nothing forced—just a good room, good people, and the music building from there.
The Tight 5-Comedy open mic + Karaoke w/Dr. Thunder
Free entry. Community energy. Two ways to take the mic.
Join us for Tight 5 Comedy Open Mic hosted by Ebony Moore from 7–8:30PM, then keep the night going with Karaoke with Dr. Thunder from 9PM–Midnight. Come laugh, sing, meet people, support local talent, and help build the kind of creative community where everyone gets a turn.

(POP-UP) IAN RIDENHOUR/MARY METAL/NICO DAVIS
ONLINE TICKETS $12 DOOR $15
Ian Ridenhour writes smart, piano-driven alternative rock music with pop sensibilities and a dark streak, or as Sav Buist of The Accidentals puts it: “like Jack White and Ben Folds had a baby.” Bolstered by his powerhouse band, Ian’s performances are, as the Mountain Xpress says, “dynamic, with hooky melodies, frenzied riffs, and kinetic, danceable energy.” As well as playing festivals across the southeast and headlining listening rooms in western North Carolina and New England, Ian has shared the stage with The Accidentals, BJ Leiderman, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and Third Eye Blind, among others. He’s been described by former music manager Bob Hinkle as “[…] a 21st century Billy Joel.” PopMatters says that Ian is “easily one of the more diverse piano-centered rock acts of modern times,” which is perhaps what jazz legend Jimmy Cobb meant when he said of Ian, “in a couple of minutes, he’s gonna be a monster.”
Nico Davis is a singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist from new jersey. Weaving between genres such as funk, indie pop and alternative R&B, nico's sound blends melancholic vocals and atmospheric production for a unique musical experience. often compared to artists like Mk.gee, Frank Ocean, James Blake and Toro y Moi, nico’s sound has been noted as “smooth and immersive” by CLOUTCLOUTCLOUT and “avant garde and profoundly emotional” by Dulaxi. “The elevation of a vineyard is among the first issues to be discussed when tasting a wine for the first time. In short, mountain and hillside vineyards offer three critical advantages: more direct and concentrated sunlight, dramatic temperature shifts, and exceptional drainage. Match these three together, and the vines struggle to survive. Those who succeed -well, you know.”

THE 3M TRIO
TRIO OF 3M’S
The 3M Trio brings together saxophonist Brian Morris with one of Philadelphia jazz’s most compelling family rhythm sections: acclaimed bassist Mike Boone and his son, drummer Mekhi Boone.
Their connection reaches far beyond the bandstand. Mike has served as both father and musical mentor to Mekhi, while Mekhi has developed into a distinctive young artist in his own right. Together, their bass-and-drum interplay carries an instinctive understanding—responsive, adventurous, and rooted in years of shared music-making.
Joined by Brian Morris on saxophone, the trio delivers an intimate evening of deep grooves, spontaneous conversation, and multigenerational jazz chemistry.
ABOUT
Brian Morris — Saxophone
Brian Morris brings a warm, expressive voice to The 3M Trio. His playing moves easily between lyrical melodies, soulful phrasing, and adventurous improvisation, giving each performance a sense of movement and conversation. Onstage, he responds closely to the rhythm section, allowing the music to develop naturally in the moment.
Mike Boone — Bass
Mike Boone is a respected Philadelphia bassist known for his deep sound, strong sense of swing, and decades of experience on the jazz scene. In The 3M Trio, he provides both the foundation and the pulse, shaping the music with authority, subtlety, and generosity. His connection with his son, drummer Mekhi Boone, gives the trio an especially intuitive rhythmic chemistry.
Mekhi Boone — Drums
Mekhi Boone brings energy, sensitivity, and a fresh musical voice to the trio. His drumming is dynamic without overpowering the music, balancing drive, detail, and responsiveness. Performing alongside his father, Mike Boone, adds another dimension to his playing—their shared history creates an unspoken understanding that makes the rhythm section feel fluid, spontaneous, and deeply connected.
